Drunk Science pilot

LOGLINE: Drunk Science is a live game show where three intoxicated comedians compete to present the best scientific dissertation to a panel of real scientists.

SUMMARY: Drunk Science is a live gameshow hosted by comedians Joanna Rothkopf (features editor at Jezebel), Shannon Odell (neuroscience PhD candidate at Weill Cornell) and Jordan Mendoza (once was pre-med), in which three intoxicated comedians compete to present the best scientific dissertation to a panel of real scientists. Each episode will feature three new comedians as well as one guest scientist, whose research specialty with be the “theme” of the show.

Episode theme examples: Dinosaurs, Black Holes, Global Warming, Alcoholism, Aging, Psychedelics, Anxiety & Depression, Cloning, Sleep, Sports Medicine, Stem Cells, etc.

OPENING: The show opens with the three hosts and the lovable lab assistant, Igor, played by Ernest Myers, chatting about the theme of the show, placing the importance of the subject in a larger context. For example, if our guest is a neuroscientist, we will humorously and accessibly discuss recent developments in brain research, or the development of the Human Brain Project. Then we’ll introduce each comedian and feature some banter about their scientific experience.

SCIENCE BOOTCAMP: This is a pre-recorded segment, where we see each comedians “prep” for the show. We also see a backstage segment, of the comedians “pre-gaming” for the show. These clips can be edited and released online for promotional purposes.

SCIENTIST INTERVIEW: This can be conducted on the studio stage with the audience present, or at the scientist’s lab.

TRIVIA: This portion of the show, the second drinking game, will vary week to week. We will play a science game with the comedians, allowing each comedian to show off their scientific proficiency. This will range from building a volcano, drawing anatomically correct parts of the body, labeling areas of the brain. The goal of this portion is to rack up “points”, allowing the winner to decide the order of dissertations.

DISSERTATIONS: Dissertations are the main segment of the show. Each dissertation will last 3-5 minutes and will be stand alone, clippable content.

WINNER/GRADUATION: The conclusion of every game show is the reveal of a champion. At the end of dissertations, the live studio audience will be able to cast a vote for their favorite comedian. The winner will go home with an honorary “degree” from Drunk Science University.

ADDITIONAL/ OPTIONAL SEGMENTS:

  • Science experiments with comedians/celebs

  • Man-on-the-street science experiments

  • Field segments: field trips to museums, labs, tech centers

  • John Oliver-esque explainers

TONE: The tone of the show is a mix of educational and LIT. Think Bill Nye the Science Guy, but at a frat party.

WHAT MAKES IT FUN/ENGAGING/EVERGREEN: Science is as hilarious, stupid, and fascinating as any other subject (we’d argue more), and the public is hungry for a show that focuses on these topics in an accessible, engaging way—and we’ve seen this with the rapid rise of scholar-celebrities like Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye. This show brings science to diverse audiences by lowering the barrier to entry and treating it with the respect and disrespect it deserves.

Thank you.
